FAQ

Straight answers

Everything people ask before they type an address — and a few things they ask after.

Do I have to give my details before I can see prices?

No. Enter a business address, ZIP code or ESID and you see today's fixed rates straight away. We only ask who you are when you decide to enroll.

Where do the prices come from?

From the daily commercial price matrices that ENGIE Resources and NRG Business publish to brokers every business morning. We import them the moment they arrive and print the effective date on every quote. The rate you see is the all-in energy price for your load zone, load factor and usage band, with our compensation already included — nothing is added afterwards.

Who is my contract with?

With the retail electric provider you choose — ENGIE Resources LLC (PUCT REP #10053) or NRG Business (Direct Energy Business, LLC, PUCT REP #10011). Yolk Compare arranges the agreement through United Power Group LLC, a broker registered with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (BR200221). We are not a retail electric provider and never take title to the electricity.

What is an ESID?

The Electric Service Identifier — a 17- or 22-digit number that identifies your meter point in the ERCOT market. It is printed on every Texas electricity bill, usually near the service address. If you don't have a bill handy, search by address and we will find it.

What do "load factor" and "usage band" mean, and why do they change my price?

Suppliers price by how steadily you use power. Load factor compares your average demand to your peak demand: a 24-hour operation with flat consumption is "high", a premises that spikes for a few hours a day is "low". Steadier load is cheaper to serve, so it gets a lower rate. Usage band is simply your annual kWh bracket. If you upload a bill we read both off it; otherwise we assume a medium load factor and you can adjust.

Is the rate really fixed?

The energy rate is fixed for the whole term on every product we show. ENGIE's "congestion pass-through" variant fixes the energy price but passes the hub-to-zone congestion component through at cost, which is why it is a little cheaper up front. Delivery (TDSP) charges are regulated by the PUCT and pass through on every commercial plan in Texas, whoever you buy from.

Can I lock a rate before my current contract ends?

Yes. Pick any start month up to twelve months ahead. A standard switch takes effect at the first meter read on or after your start date, so you avoid early-termination fees from your current provider as long as the start is on or after your contract end. Check your current agreement first — any early-termination fee it carries is between you and that provider.

Which parts of Texas can you price?

Any premises inside the deregulated ERCOT market: the Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North, Texas-New Mexico Power and Lubbock Power & Light delivery territories. Municipal utilities (Austin Energy, CPS Energy), electric co-operatives and the parts of Texas outside ERCOT (Entergy, SWEPCO, El Paso Electric) are not open to competition.

What if my business uses more than 1,000,000 kWh a year?

The daily matrices stop at one million kWh (NRG's online agreement stops at 300,000). Above that, suppliers price each account individually — request a callback and United Power Group will run a custom quote, usually within one business day.

How does signing work?

After the enrollment form we generate the supplier's own agreement and open a DocuSign session in your browser. You sign the agreement and a standard usage-history authorization, we email you the completed copy, and the broker submits it to the supplier the same day so the price is honored.

Is Yolk Compare free to use?

Yes. Like every broker, we are paid a commission by the supplier you choose. It is built into the rate you see — there is no fee on top and no separate line on your bill.

What happens to my information?

Meter searches store nothing about you. If you enroll or ask for a callback we keep only what is needed to arrange your contract and answer you, as set out in our privacy policy. We never sell or rent contact details.
